William H. Seward, the American Secretary of State, negotiated the purchase for $7,2000,000; when his opponents called Alaska "Seward's folly" he declared that he considered his service in acquiring the territory the most important act of his official career. The region had formerly been called Russia America, but Senator Charles Sumner of Massachuetts suggested a new name, Alaska. The word is an English corruption of the native Aleut Al-ay-ek-sa, meaning great land, or mainland, which was applied somewhat vaguely to the entire region, but more particularly to the long, narrow strip now known as the Alaska Peninsula.
