The Houston
Metropolitan Area, located in Southeast Texas, on Interstate Highway 10 about 50 miles from the Gulf of
Mexico, is made up of six counties: Brazoria,
Chambers, Fort Bend,
Galveston, Harris,
Liberty, Montgomery
and Waller. This area is
highly industrialized, having the nation's largest concentration of
petrochemical plants. Predominant manufacturing activities include petroleum
refining, chemicals, food, fabricated metal products, non-electrical machinery,
primary metals, scientific instruments, paper and allied products, printing and
publishing, and cement production. The City
of Houston, in Harris County, is the largest Texas
city, and fourth largest U.S. city. It is a center of international business
with more than 55 foreign governments maintaining offices in the city. Harris
County is home to the largest U.S. wheat-exporting port, and is among the top
U.S. ports in the value of foreign trade and total tonnage. The area is also a
center for energy, space, and medical research due to the Johnson Space Center,
